Sharing some pages from a new photobook by John Bolloten, this new book by John is a vital document, and I believe everyone should spend some time with it. Published by Shotta Publications and Fistful of Books. Buy the book here
‘THIS IS NOT A LIFE, IT’S JUST AN EXISTENCE’ gives us a shocking and often taboo glimpse into the day-to-day world of people who have been chronically and repeatedly let down by social systems and safety nets that have been there to help them. This book is an incredibly important insight into the reality of their lived experience and the telling of their stories, Vicki Beere
I’ve featured John’s work in the past on Documenting Britain and here; it was an honour to see this book in development and some pages from the book, and share some of my thoughts while John was making the book. John is very focused, has a clear way of working, and knows exactly how he wants to show his work and share the lives of the people who trust him. I enjoyed talking to him about the book development and seeing it come into fruition.
My quote, back of the book
John’s sensitive and honest collaboration with the people in this book shows the hidden violence that many decided to ignore. John had made work where you can’t disregard the people within the pages. The photographs and life stories are brutal, but they should be seen and heard by as many people as possible. Chloe Juno Buy the book here

This book is the most honest account of people living with trauma I’ve ever seen, and for John to have truly gained the trust of these traumatized and damaged people with his empathetic, honest, and respectful approach is an astonishing feat. This document of trauma, of wasted lives, of intimacy, crime, and addiction should enrage us all.
